In 1999, journalist and editor Fred Silver created the first incarnation of Intermedia Services working from home in the Lewis village of Lower Bayble and set out to bridge perceived gaps between local information suppliers and consumers.

This was to be achieved through writing for websites, training for community newspaper staff and volunteers, along with creating publicity and providing articles to local, regional and national publications.

Major projects included the Eriskay Causeway Information Service which provided a constant flow of information about the building of the £10m causeway and the ferry link to Barra.

Fred worked with and for Western Isles Enterprise, HITRANS, the Western Isles NHS Board, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, and a variety of other community agencies.
